Looking for a Maui family photographer who treats your session like a vacation, not a job? You are in the right place. Wilde Sparrow Photography has been photographing Maui families for years, with a local team based in Kihei who know every quiet pocket of beach on the South Shore and every hidden corner of the West Side that is still photographable after the fire.
This page covers everything we wish every visiting family knew before booking: where and when we shoot, what a session actually looks like, what it costs, and what makes our setup different from the dozens of other photographers Google shows you. If you have already done your reading and want to skip to availability, scroll to the booking section at the bottom.
Maui sessions are run by our associate photography team, who are based in Kihei full-time. They have been shooting weddings and family beach sessions on Maui for years and know the Maui coastlines the way only a local can. That matters more than most visitors realize.
On a tourist-photographer combination, you get someone driving up from the opposite side of the island or flying in from another island, hoping the wind is calm enough at a beach they have been to twice. With a local, you get someone who already knows whether the trades are going to flatten your golden hour or leave it perfect, which beaches will be packed at 6 pm on a Tuesday in June, and where to relocate without missing the light if a beach elopement moves into our spot at the last minute.
Aislinn, owner/founder of Wilde Sparrow runs the business from the Big Island, handles all booking communication, and personally edits every Maui gallery start to finish. So while the camera is in our local Maui photographer’s hands, the look of your gallery is consistent with everything else on this site. No outsourcing. No surprise edits.
We split Maui into three working zones. Each one has its own permit, its own beaches, and its own ideal time of day.
This is our home base and where most of our sessions happen. Kihei beaches face west, which means the sunsets fall straight into the water, and the trade winds are usually calmer here than anywhere else on the island during summer.
Favorite Kihei spots: Kalama Park (great for big extended families with toddlers running around), Charley Young Beach, Kamaole Beach Park I and III, and the soft lava-rock backdrops that hug the coast between Kamaole and Keawakapu.
Wailea options: Polo Beach, Ulua Beach, and Po’olenalena Beach (one of our favorite locations for couples and small families). Wailea beaches feel a little more polished than Kihei. The light is identical because they are on the same west-facing stretch, but the resort backdrop reads differently in photos.
If you are staying at the Grand Wailea, Four Seasons Maui, Andaz, Wailea Beach Resort, or any of the Kihei condo complexes, your session will most likely be in this zone.

This is where things get sensitive. We do not shoot in Lahaina town. The 2023 fire devastated that community, and the last thing recovering residents need is a photo session set up where a home once stood. We are firm on this.
What we do shoot: Kapalua Bay, D.T. Fleming Beach, and Ironwoods. These are all north of the burn zone, were physically untouched by the fire, and are gorgeous, photographable beaches. Kapalua Bay, in particular, has a sheltered crescent shape that protects against the wind on days when South Maui is too gusty.
West Maui sessions carry a $100 travel fee to cover the drive from Kihei. If you are staying in Kapalua, Napili, or Kaanapali, this is the right zone for you.
Sunrise on Maui is its own world. Fewer people, softer light, and the best chance of a totally calm ocean. The catch: it is early! We are typically meeting families on the beach by 5:45 am in summer, 6:30 am in winter.
Sunrise works especially well for families with babies and toddlers (everyone is up at that hour anyway), for multi-generational groups where grandparents do not love the heat, and for couples who want the beach to themselves.
This is the part that surprises people the most. We do not shoot mid-day. Not noon, not 2 pm, not 4 pm in summer. The light at those hours is ugly. It washes out skin tones, leaves harsh shadows under everyone’s eyes, and makes the ocean look gray instead of the impossible blue you came to Maui for.
Sunrise and sunset are the two windows where the light flatters everyone in the frame at the same time. The trade-off is timing. You will be up early, or you will eat dinner late. We promise it is worth it. If you are skeptical, scroll through the Kihei post linked above. Every photo was shot in golden hour, and you can see why we do not budge on this.
Here is the start-to-finish. We have shot enough of these to know exactly how the hour flows.
All of our packages are the same across islands. We are transparent about pricing because we have heard too many stories of families showing up to a session and being surprised by add-on fees.
All prices are subject to Hawaii state tax (4.712%). West Maui sessions add a $100 travel fee. If you are a teacher, military, kama’aina, or a returning client, you get our 10% lifetime discount on every future session, no expiration.
You will see Maui photographers advertising sessions starting at $195 or $300. We all have to start somewhere and we have only love for locals trying to make a living on the islands! But we also know that we are roughly four times that on the entry package. Here is what you are paying for.
If your priority is the cheapest possible Maui photographer, we are not the right fit, and that is okay. If your priority is hands-off, professional, beautifully edited family photos that you will print and frame for the next twenty years, this is what we do.
How far in advance should I book?
Two months ahead minimum. Three months for summer (June through August) and the December holiday week. Dates book fast, especially golden hour windows on weekend evenings. If you are inside that window, hit reply and we will tell you what is open.
What should we wear?
This is the most-asked question of all. Short version: coordinated palettes, not matching outfits. Solid colors, light layers, soft fabrics. We have full guides on what to wear for Hawaii beach photos, shades of pink, and extended family palettes.
What if it rains?
Maui rain almost always blows through. We watch the radar in the hours leading up to your session and reschedule for the next available golden hour if we genuinely cannot shoot. Rescheduled sessions do not cost extra. We have never had a client lose their photos to weather.
Do you photograph maternity sessions on Maui?
Yes. Maui maternity beach sessions follow the same packages and golden-hour timing as family sessions. See our Hawaii maternity photographer guide for the full overview, including babymoon planning.
What about babies and newborns?
Newborns photograph beautifully in beach sessions. We have a dedicated guide for Hawaii beach photos with a newborn that covers timing, what to bring, and how to keep a tiny baby comfortable in the salt air.
Are mini sessions an option?
Sometimes. Mini sessions on Maui are the Ohana package: 20 minutes, 10 photos, $750. We run them year-round when our Maui photographer has availability. Read our full Maui mini session guide before booking to make sure they are right for your group size and goals.
