If you are searching for a Maui photographer mini session, you have probably already noticed something. The pricing is all over the place. Some photographers offer 15-minute sessions for $195. Others charge $400 for 20 minutes. Some offer mini-only flash sales twice a year and full sessions the rest of the time. It is confusing.
In this post, I try to help sort it out for you. But keep in mind, Hawaii photographers are typically solopreneurs! We all create our pricing based on a combination of factors, including our unique costs of doing business. At Wilde Sparrow, we run our Maui mini sessions through the Ohana package, which is 20 minutes, includes 10 final edited images, up to 6 people, $750. Whether that is the right choice depends entirely on what you actually want from the photos. Below is the honest version of who a mini session is right for, who it is wrong for, and what to expect either way.
A WSP Maui mini session (the Ohana package) is:
That is the whole package. There are no surprise fees. The online booking proposal that we send before the session shows you exactly this.
Mini sessions are designed for small groups. A couple, a couple plus a baby, a small family of four, two grandparents with one grandchild. The 20-minute window is plenty for that size. Once you push past 6 people, the math changes. Getting 8 people coordinated, eyes open, and not blinking in the same frame takes time. We used to allow this, but after 10+ years in business, we noticed it greatly reduced the quality of our work and the final gallery, and it just didn’t meet our standard of excellence. Now we cap mini’s (Ohana package) at 6 people, no exception.
Ten images is enough to print one large canvas, frame two or three favorites, send a holiday card, and post a couple of squares to Instagram. If your goal is a feature hallway gallery wall, mini sessions are not the move. Pick the Golden package (45 minutes, 25 images) instead.
If your Maui trip is 4 nights and you have one free golden hour to give to a photographer, a mini session is a smart use of that time. You can be in and out; dinner reservation still happens, and kids are not in pre-meltdown territory. Quick and stress-free!
Maternity mini sessions on Maui are popular for a reason. Twenty minutes at golden hour at a Kihei beach gets you the photos you actually want without keeping you on your feet too long. Most of our Maui maternity clients book the Ohana package.
Same logic. A mini session at sunset on Po’olenalena Beach with you, your partner, and the bump. Twenty minutes is enough.
Extended family reunions, three-generation trips, sibling-and-spouses combinations: do not book the Ohana package. Even our most efficient sessions with 8+ people need a minimum of 45 minutes to photograph everyone in groupings, individually, and together. The Golden package is the right call, and there’s a reason it is our most popular package! The Legacy package is what most reunion and large-family groups actually need.
Twenty minutes does not leave time for individual portraits if you also want family group shots. If your gallery wishlist includes “a beautiful one of just the baby,” “a fun one of just the older two,” plus the family combinations, book the Golden package.
If you do not take family photos at home and the Maui session is the only chance you have all year to capture a beautiful image of your kids, do not skimp. The Golden package is $400 more than the Ohana, and it gives you 25 images instead of 10 and 25 extra minutes to actually relax into the session. Worth every dollar.
This is our home base. Most mini sessions happen at Charley Young Beach, Kamaole Beach Park I or III in Kihei, or Polo Beach, Ulua Beach, or Po’olenalena in Wailea. The full breakdown of South Maui beaches is in our Kihei family photographers’ guide. If you are at the Andaz Maui, Four Seasons, Grand Wailea, Wailea Beach Resort, Hyatt Regency Wailea, or one of the Kihei condos, your photographer can meet you within a 10-minute drive of your hotel.
West Maui mini sessions add a $100 travel fee for the drive from Kihei. We do not shoot in Lahaina town for reasons we explain in our West Maui post.
Same advice as our full sessions: pick the one that matches your group’s vibe. Sunset wins for couples on a quick trip and families with napped-out toddlers. Sunrise wins for jet-lagged mainland families, multi-gen groups with grandparents, and anyone who wants the beach to themselves. If you are not sure which is right for you, hit reply to your inquiry, and we will review your trip schedule and make a recommendation.
Maybe controversial in the industry, but we believe in price transparency. Hiding pricing gives us the ick. So this feels worth addressing directly because it is the question that comes up the most.
If your priority is the cheapest possible Maui mini session, we are not the right fit. If your priority is 10 beautifully edited photos that you will print and hang for the next twenty years, we are exactly that.
Mini sessions book first because the price is lower and the time slot is shorter. Sunset windows on weekend evenings in summer and around Thanksgiving and Christmas disappear three months out. If you are inside the 8-week mark and you want a mini, hit reply right away! Even if you’re looking for a last minute spot, feel free to reach out and we’ll do our best to fit you in.
Email booking@wildesparrow.com with your travel dates, where you are staying, and your group size. We will respond within one business day with what is available and a Smart File link to confirm.

We watch the radar in the days and hours leading up to every session and reschedule for the next golden hour if we genuinely cannot shoot. Rescheduled sessions due to weather do not incur extra charges.
No. We run Ohana package mini sessions year-round when our Maui photographer has availability. Some other Maui studios only offer minis during holiday flash events. We do not work that way. Learn more about our golden hour sessions: https://wildesparrow.com/4-golden-hour-portrait-session-tips/
