Wailea is really a row of beautiful beaches with resorts attached, strung along one walkable path on Maui’s sunny south shore. As a Wailea family photographer, I think of that as a gift. Whatever resort you are in, there is a calm golden cove a short walk away that is made for family photos. Here is how we match your family to the right beach, the light worth aiming for, and how a session slips into a resort day without eating it.
The Wailea Beach Path runs about a mile and a half and ties the whole resort row together, so your beach is usually a short stroll from your room. Wailea Beach, the wide golden crescent, sits right in front of the Four Seasons Maui and the Grand Wailea. Polo Beach, quieter and a little tucked away, anchors the Fairmont Kea Lani end. Mokapu and Ulua, calm and protected, sit just below the Andaz. Part of what we do is knowing which of these suits your group, your kids’ ages, and the crowd that evening. Tell us where you are staying and we will point you to the cove that works.
Wailea faces south and a little west, which hands you two good options most of the year. Sunrise is cool and nearly empty, just you and the quiet. Sunset drops toward Lanai and Kahoolawe and turns the whole crescent gold. From roughly December through April there is a bonus. Humpback whales travel close to this coast in winter, and it is not unusual to catch a spout or a breach out past the shore break while we photograph. We settle on the exact time around your date and your kids’ rhythm once you book.

You are on vacation, so a session should feel like a nice part of the evening, not a thing to endure. Ours run about 20 to 45 minutes, timed for the golden hour so you still make your dinner reservation. We keep the direction light, just enough to settle everyone in, then we give your family room to be together while we work around you. Most parents tell us it was easier and more fun than they braced for, and the kids barely clocked that it was a photo shoot at all.
Wailea’s beaches are some of the loveliest on Maui, which means you are rarely the only family on them. That is where the editing earns its keep. Aislinn finishes every gallery by hand, and clearing the background, a stray beachgoer here, a forgotten umbrella there, an errant paddleboard, is part of that work. What comes back looks like the cove was yours alone, even on a full Saturday evening in Wailea.
We are not flying in for your session. Our Maui photographers live and work this south-shore stretch constantly, so we know where the light lands at each cove, which spots stay calm when the afternoon wind comes up, and how to keep things moving when a toddler is done. We have photographed Hawaii families since 2012, hold more than 200 five-star reviews, and have been featured in Click Magazine. And since Aislinn edits every gallery herself, your photos come out consistent no matter which of us meets you on the sand.
Book as early as you can. We take a limited number of sessions a week, and Wailea’s best evenings go first over the holidays and spring break. For clothes, soft neutrals and warm sandy tones sit beautifully in the south-shore light, and one look per person is all you need. Our guide to what to wear walks through it, and you can see more of our work on the Maui family photography page. Staying just up the road in Kihei instead? Here is a Kihei family session.
In Wailea for your Maui trip?
Tell us your resort and your Maui travel dates, and we will match you to the right cove. Check our availability. Reach out here.

Can we walk to the shoot from our resort?
Usually, yes. Most Wailea resorts sit right on the Beach Path, so your beach is often a short stroll from your room. We send exact meeting details once you book.
We are at the Grand Wailea. Which beach would we use?
Most likely Wailea Beach, the wide golden crescent right out front. Depending on your group and the crowd that evening, we might steer you to a quieter neighbor a few minutes down the path.
Can we get the whales in our photos?
From about December through April, sometimes. Humpbacks pass close to the south shore in winter and we keep an eye out, though no one can promise a breach on cue.
Sunrise or sunset in Wailea?
Both work here. Sunrise is calm and empty, and sunset lights the crescent gold over the outer islands. We recommend one based on your dates and your kids.
How far ahead should we book?
As soon as you have your dates. Wailea’s peak weeks fill first, so earlier is always safer.
