Packing for a Hawaii family beach trip with little kids comes down to sun protection, water safety, and a few things people always forget. This Hawaii family packing list covers all of it, including the reef-safe sunscreen rules that surprise a lot of visitors, so you land ready for the beach instead of hunting for supplies on day one.
Across Hawaii, stores cannot sell sunscreens containing oxybenzone or octinoxate. Maui and the Big Island go further and only sell mineral sunscreen, meaning zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. You are allowed to bring your own, but the simplest move is to pack a non-nano mineral sunscreen before you fly, where it is cheaper and easier to find. Skip the aerosol sprays, which mostly drift onto the sand. You can read Maui County’s mineral-only rule for the details.
The Hawaii sun is stronger than most families expect. Rash guards or UPF swim shirts for everyone do more than any lotion, and they mean sunscreen only has to cover faces and hands. Add wide-brim hats, sunglasses, and a light cover-up. For babies, pack a UPF swimsuit, a hat, and plan to keep them in the shade during midday. And if you don’t want to pack beach gear for kids, look into beach rentals on each island! You can usually find sun shades, wagons and even beach toys.
Water shoes are worth it, especially on the Big Island, where many beaches have lava rock and reefs that little feet do not love. Bring a puddle jumper or Coast Guard-approved life vest for non-swimmers, since some beaches have shore break, and always keep kids within arm’s reach. Round it out with a dry bag, reusable water bottles for hydration in the heat, a pop-up shade tent, and a few beach toys, or plan to buy cheap ones there.
A baby carrier travels better than a stroller on sand. Pack swim diapers, plenty of snacks (island groceries are pricey), a small cooler, wipes, a change of clothes, and a lovey for naps. Little comforts from home go a long way when everyone is off their routine.
These are the things families leave at home. Aloe or after-sun, anti-itch cream for bug bites, a basic first aid kit, and motion sickness medicine for winding coastal roads and boat trips. Bring your chargers and a portable battery, a little cash for parking and food trucks, and reusable bags. One Big Island specific tip: pack a fleece and long pants if you are planning to visit Mauna Kea Summit or Volcanoes National Park – it gets genuinely cold at the higher elevations.
Family photos are the souvenir you keep the longest and the one people book last. Reserve your session before your dates fill, and keep outfits simple. Soft neutrals and warm earth tones photograph beautifully on the beach, and one outfit per person is plenty. Our guide to what to wear makes that part easy, and you can see our sessions on the family vacation page.

We photograph families across the Big Island, Maui, and Oahu. Check availability for your travel dates and let’s get it planned. Reach out here.

Do I need special sunscreen for Hawaii?
Yes. Pack a non-nano mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. On Maui and the Big Island only mineral sunscreen is sold in stores, and it is the best choice for reefs everywhere in the islands.
Can I bring my own sunscreen to Hawaii?
Yes. The law restricts what stores can sell, not what you use, so you can bring your own. But please think of the safety of our oceans and reefs and make a thoughtful, caring decision with your sunscreen. Mineral sunscreen is still the simplest and most reef-friendly option.
Do kids need water shoes in Hawaii?
They are a good idea, especially on the Big Island, where lava rock shorelines are common. They protect little feet and make tide-pooling more fun.
What should we pack for a Big Island beach trip?
All your beach gear, plus one warm layer. Higher elevations like Mauna Kea and Volcanoes National Park get cold, even when the coast is hot.
When should we book a family photo session?
As soon as you know your travel dates. We take a limited number of sessions each week, and the popular weeks fill first.
