In my pre-session questionnaire I ask parents if there is anything they are nervous or worried about for their session? The number one answer I get, “I’m worried my kids won’t behave”.
SPOILER: your kid will probably at some point not “behave”. And you know what? It is going to be okay. Actually, that little bit of mischievous is where the magic happens. Don’t believe me? Check out this sweet girl from this family session. It is HARD to be still and behave for an hour so the solution is lots of running, playing, ticke fights, fart jokes… anything to get those wiggles out! And those pictures are some of my favorites!
With kids, I never try to force a moment. If I suggest a gentle pose and they aren’t into, we change course and follow their lead instead. I’m not a parent so maybe this sounds crazy to you if you are, but it really works for me. I’d rather have a happy kid splashing in the water than a ‘I am totally over this so i’m gonna pout and look mad’ kid, ya know?
