Sunset Family Photo Session, Pauoa Bay, Big Island – Hawaii

Though I go into every family session with a game plan, I’ve been doing this long enough to know that sometimes that plan gets thrown out the window. To be a good photographer you have to be ready to go with the flow. This is where my love for family led posing really comes into play. My plan may be for everyone to stand in one area so I can get a great, clean group shot. But on our way there it becomes clear the littles aren’t interested in anything but sitting and playing in the sand. So you know what? New plan – we’re all going to play in the sand! Allowing kids this time to explore and starting the session without anyone barking orders at them really sets the tone for the rest of the session. It builds trust and sets us up for success!

This family had just arrived to Hawaii so you can imagine adjusting to the time change for everyone was not the easiest! I left lots of room to go with the flow, follow the kids lead and make sure we still got the important, beautiful shots but gave everyone time to play and be together. The result was beautiful, relaxed images showcasing togetherness in a way that never felt forced.

So if you’re a family photographer looking for the perfect session plan, I’m here to tell you that the perfect plan includes room to improvise, read body language, play and going with the flow. Aka no plan at all. That’s part of the fun of this job! No two families are the same so no two shoots are ever the same. If you have a minute, let me know what you think about this fun session!
