There was a lot of excitement around the islands when the Disney Aulani Resort opened in 2011. The lagoons in front of the resort are a beloved local beach spot due to the often calm waters and ample shade. Parking can be tough in this area (especially with the popular hotels now open), but that doesn’t stop locals and visitors alike from rushing to visit them. They truly are so beautiful. We look for a few things when curating our Hawaii photo session locations list. Most importantly, we are limited to locations where we can get permits for commercial photography. See, while all beaches in Hawaii are public by law – not all are available for commercial work. If money is being exchanged, there are limitations. These rules keep beaches from being overcrowded with big movie productions, rows of rental businesses, and photo shoots.

Second – we look for beaches that aren’t too crowded and offer an unbelievable sunset or sunrise view. On Oahu, this can be tough. Even tougher at a popular family resort like the Aulani. But we do have a few tricks up our sleeve! If you’re looking for an Aulani photographer, our team can help!

Which is better for Oahu Photo Sessions? Sunrise or Sunset

First and foremost – if you are open to a sunrise session, we strongly recommend that, as beaches are typically empty at sunrise. Being an Aulani Photographer, we can work there at sunrise OR sunset – but sunrise is easier on everyone 😉

We also consider accessibility as many of our clients have strollers, little feet, or older family members joining for sessions, and we want to be mindful of ease of access. We have a few more adventurous beaches on our list, especially for our Big Island clients who often seek out iconic lava rock locations. Still, we advise that these are *not* ideal for anyone with trouble walking.
