Ready for a radical point of view??
Kids should act like kids during a photo session.
Yep, you heard me. I think they should laugh, splash water, run around, spin in circles, pick up rocks, even do cartwheels if they want. Parents, take a deep breath – I know you must think I’m crazy right now. But sometimes I’ll run into parents who say “we love your natural and candid images!” and then when we get to the shoot they instantly begin scolding their kids, telling them not to touch the sand or get dirty or run on the beach. Honestly – I can’t get those natural images if your kids are terrified that if they move they are going to get yelled at by mom and dad. And it’s also confusing for a kid to hear me (stranger to them) asking them to run wild and get their wiggles out and tickle and spin with each other, with one eye wearily on mom and dad not sure if they are allowed to do any of these fun things.
And let me make this one part clear – I am NEVER ever ever trying to shame parents who scold their kids! But for our time, I just ask that you (parents) take your “boss hats” off. For 30 or 60 minutes, let them get dirty. We can change shirts! Let them run wild. We’re at the beach after all!
Truthfully, kids do the most photographic things when they’re free to be. And I’ll be snapping away while the kids are playing and well, being kids! I love the realness, and you will too. Because that’s your life and your family, right now, as they are… and that’s what we’re here to document, after all.
