Big Island Sunset Family Beach Portraits

Something I wish every single family knew before their session:

Stop putting unrealistic expectations on your kids.

What do I mean by this? Simply stop expecting your kids will stand perfectly still, smile when told, and behave like perfect angels during a photoshoot!

They might do all those things. But they also might not and that’s OKAY because they are kids. Not only that, they are kids in a new environment meeting someone they’ve never met before and being asked to do some unusual things like hold hands and walk down the beach together or tickle their siblings. It can be a lot for some kids.

But if you, the parents, release your expectations and be 100% ready to go with the flow and interact loving and with gentle understanding to your kids if they start getting a little silly or stop listening – I promise everything with still be so beautiful.

This family did this perfectly. They understood completely that kids will be kids. And they trusted me when I would have them chase their kids down the beach, play a game of parachute to help get the wiggles out, and spoke with such gentle kindness to their kids during moments when they might have felt ready to be done.

And the images speak for themselves. If you want images like this – true and honest and full of love – to help create a safe space for your kids. Don’t expect them to behave in ways they never have before. Instead, go with the flow with them. Be silly, be goofy – just be there for them.
