To help you plan the vacation of your dreams, we’ve compiled a list of tips to help you pick the best time to visit Hawaii.
“The only good thing about leaving Hawaii is that you really appreciate it when you return. – John Richard Stephens”
That’s the beauty of Hawaii, the magic of catering to each guest. The islands are beautiful regardless of which time of the year you decide to visit – however, there are a few things you need to consider to make sure that it’s the perfect time for YOU. Different seasons and different islands cater to different people, based on what they would like to get out of their time on the islands. Be sure to pinpoint what your ideal time would look like in Hawaii, and let’s take it from there.
Although the islands are known for their sunny days and blissful weather, keep in mind that we do have a rainy season (December – March) and hurricane season (June – November) may be approaching as you’re about to plan your trip. Now, tropical rainfall might just be your cup of tea. However, if you’re looking for hot summer days, your best bet will be between April through September where rainfall is at its lowest. Don’t mind a bit of rain? No worries, there’s still plenty to do, even when it rains!
Hawaii has no shortage of adventure-filled activities. Whether you’d like to sip cocktails on the beach, go deep-sea diving, explore the islands or sunbathe all day long – you’ll find it here. Be sure to plan your trip while keeping your hobbies in mind. If you’d like to spend your days floating in the ocean, keep in mind that the waves are usually biggest during the winter months, so conditions aren’t always safe even for a stroll along the shoreline. “When in doubt, don’t go out” is what the locals say. For calmer waters, avoid December – February.
The islands are a popular holiday destination, and it’s easy to see why. Typically, the most visitors are in July and December. If you want to avoid the crowds, avoid the holidays. Between Thanksgiving and mid-January, restaurants are at their busiest, tours book up quickly and it’s not always easy to tackle the Hawaii traffic (yes, it’s real). Our slowest seasons, when the islands tend to be a bit emptier are February and late September through October. Tourist season also highly depends on which area of Hawaii you plan on visiting. Ask about which events and holidays are happening around the time of your visit so you can establish whether or not it’s peak season.
For those who are looking for the perfect combination of lower prices, fewer people, and great weather, we recommend booking during what is known as the ‘shoulder season’ which is during May or September. If you’d like to save some money, we’d also recommend booking your holiday during the off-peak season, where the prices are substantially lower.
psst. Be sure to check the Hawaii Save Travels website for the latest details on vaccine and/or testing requirements to enter the state!
