Our first family staycation was at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel on the Big Island. It felt a bit ambitious to stay a few nights with a 1-year-old, so we kept it close to home. The beauty of this hotel, though, is you feel like you’re walking into a different world. It is so relaxing and full of history. The grounds alone are insanely gorgeous. But then you see the famed Mauna Kea beach and think it could be heaven.
When the forecast is looking cloudy, it is typical to get nervous. I get it – you want everything about your photo session to be perfect, and the weather is about the only thing that none of us can control. Heads up – from January to March, you can expect a daily passing rain shower over the island’s west side. It is expected, but sometimes it does mean we get some overcast weather at your session. I wanted to share these Mauna Kea Beach photos so you could see that even cloudy evenings can be so beautiful!
If it helps, I’ve had to reschedule three sessions in seven years of working on the Big Island due to rain. And I’m not afraid of clouds because they mean beautiful, soft, flattering light and, if lucky, a gorgeous sunset!
This night the clouds were looking mighty scary, but I knew that, more than likely, all would be fine, and it was! We had such fun running along the beach in front of the Mauna Kea Hotel.
