Sunrise is an early, early wakeup call BUT there are some true benefits!
Empty beaches. People don’t tend to hit the beach before the sun comes up so this is the perfect time to do your session and your chances of an empty or nearly empty beach increase tenfold. Woohoo!
That soft, gorgeous light! On the west side of the island, the sun comes up slowly behind Mauna Kea and during that time – the light is soft and flattering. No harsh shadows or bright beams of sunshine. Just pastel skies and wispy clouds. Super bonus: because the light is so consistent, these sessions don’t take as long for me to edit so if you need your pictures back FAST (hello, Christmas cards!) then opt for sunrise for a speedy turnaround.
Use that jet lag. Whether you’re coming from California or New York – you’ll be up pretty dang early those first few days you’re in Hawaii. The time change adjustment takes a few days. So if you’re already awake – why not use that to your advantage and do your pictures early too?
Rip off the bandaid. There are nerves that come with having your photos taken. Not only is it a significant investment, but will your kids do okay? Will your husband be wearing his “I don’t want to be here” face the entire time? Will it be a disaster? These are completely normal things to worry about. I’m not saying you won’t worry about them at sunrise but you also won’t have to go through an entire day worrying about an evening session. Before the clock hits 8 am, your family pictures will be done and you can enjoy the rest of your day without worry! Have a big breakfast, hit the beach and just enjoy a worry-free vacation knowing you’ve already done your pictures!
If you’re worried about sunrise – don’t be! Check out this gorgeous family session from my new favorite sunrise spot – Kukio Beach near the Four Seasons Hualalai – and tell me this light and this family aren’t just picture perfect!
