One of the most common questions we get is, “Where will our Maui photo session take place?”. This is a great question, and the answer is – it depends! The second part of that answer is – don’t worry, you’ve got options.
First, let’s talk permits! The state of Hawaii requires permits when photographers use state/county beaches (don’t worry; we take care of all of this for you!). And not all beaches in Hawaii are permitted for commercial use. This doesn’t mean you can’t go to a beach with your family and take out your iPhone or even your professional camera and take photos for yourself. Of course, you can do that! The important word here is “commercial“. A session is commercial if 1) money is exchanged and 2) will be used in a portfolio or social media to promote a business and service.
As respectful residents of these islands, we only offer photo sessions at permitted locations. FYI: We do not work in culturally sensitive areas such as Pololu Valley and Mauna Kea Summit, as commercial work is strongly discouraged by the stewards of those places.
Maui offers a stunning backdrop with breathtaking beaches, lush landscapes, and vibrant sunsets. And guess what? Our team has photographed over 700 sessions (yes, 700!) over the years, so we know a thing or two about finding the best Maui Beach Photo Locations.
Maui is known for its stunning beaches. For example, Kapalua Bay, Wailea Beach, and Makena Beach provide beautiful backdrops for family photos. One of my favorite things about Maui is how many gorgeous beaches there are nearly anywhere you go.
If you want that ‘sun setting over the water’ look for your family photos, you’ll want to choose a sunset session on the West side. And WOW get ready for a spectacular sunset. We love Kihei for Maui Beach Photo Locations because the beaches in that area are beautiful and accessible.
Many resorts in Maui have well-maintained grounds and picturesque settings perfect for professional photography, such as the Grand Wailea, The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua, and the Four Seasons Resort Maui. If you are staying at these resorts, most are more than okay with you using the beautiful spots around the hotel for professional photos. The most important thing is to talk to the front desk and ensure you have the go-ahead beforehand. But especially if you want to keep travel time low, having a professional photographer come to your hotel for your Maui photos is a great option.
