Family Photographers – Big Island Vog Sunset, Hawaii
There is nothing quite like living on an island with a (very!) active volcano. Nothing can prepare you for it. It is impossible to know what that volcano will do. Thankfully there is a team of very very smart scientists keeping us informed and we are far enough away to never be in any danger at all!
In fact, the biggest impact I’ve personally had from the volcano is the vog (volcanic fog) and the mass influx of texts from friends and family asking if I am okay and safe whenever the volcano does something crazy!
The vog changes the sky dramatically when it appears. You can see from these shots, there is a gorgeous soft haze in the sky that doesn’t happen with anything else. It is a unique kind of beauty and so fun to work with, though it can be a bit challenging!
Luckily the vog doesn’t get this thick often, only when our tradewinds are down. But it is a good reminder that we live with and near a volcano, which isn’t something many people can say!
