My bag of props is so dialed in at this point. I stopped counting a while ago, but I personally (Aislinn, writer of this blog!) have photographed at least 800 photo sessions. I donât say that to brag. It took me YEARS to figure out what to bring to sessions. As someone who hates unnecessary weight in my gear bag, I’ve got this focused. And now I’m happy to share with you my camera bag must-haves as a family photographer in Hawaii.
So, in case youâve wanted to overhaul your bag of props or just need a few new ideas, Iâm coming at you with my âtop fiveâ list. đ€ And if you want even more – hop over to my shoppable list to get one of your own for your gear bag!
I didnât want to love these. They seemed gimmicky at first, but when you want to get the shot, youâll try anything. Long story short, theyâve become my #1 secret weapon! Kids love looking and laughing at these, even the squirmiest toddlers. Iâve found them at B&H, Amazon, and Etsy. Shop them here!
A blanket is the most multi-purpose item you can pack in your bag. You never know when a nice blanket will come in handy. Perfect for sitting poses, a game of Parachute, or providing cover for a quick outfit change, I never go to a shoot without one. Itâs perfect to pull out for sitting poses, a spontaneous game of parachute, or even to provide cover for a quick outfit change! After years of searching, I finally found the perfect beach photo session blanket on Etsy. It’s lightweight, a non-distracting and neutral color, and easy to clean.Â
Never underestimate the power of Baby Shark! Usually I’ll just sing a few songs for kids, but sometimes throwing on some music on a phone does the trick to get even the most upset kids into the mood to have some fun and take photos. I have several different playlists ready for family sessions, including one of fun sing-along type songs that always get kids smiling! Here’s one of my favorite beach session playlists!Â
Listen⊠I am not above making bribes as a family photographer! Of course, always ask the parents first if it is okay to offer their child a lollipop or candy. Make sure to get a brand with a few different flavor options so kids can choose. I also opt for organic or lower-sugar lollipops. I call these my “break in case of emergency” secret weapons. And they have saved many photo sessions with kids breaking down! Don’t knock it until you try it!
I always have a big pack of these âMake a Faceâ sticker sheets in my prop bag. Kids love these, and it’s always good to have a non-candy option available. It can keep them busy while you get a few shots of the parents or, you know, another great bribing tool. đ
So, what do you think of my camera bag must-haves? Do we have any of the same items? Did I miss something that you consider to be a must-have? If so, Iâd love to hear from you!
