Big Island Family Photographers – Hapuna Beach, Hawaii
Did you know that I got started in photography 12 years ago when I decided to take headshots for all of my talented performer friends while I was living in NYC. That’s right! After dropping out of my Anthropology 101 course my freshman year of college, I filled my schedule with a film photography course. And that got me started on my path and love affair with photography.
Our film course homework often included simply walking around NYC and capturing the city. We were encouraged to be active observers. An oxymoron on the surface, but a way of saying that we should observe but capture scenes in a way that we could control with our artistic eye. I loved that class so much.
Later in the course, we were encouraged to take more pictures of people’s faces – something I was downright terrified to do. It took weeks for me to build up the courage. I started with friends and even then I remember my hands feeling shaky and my stomach being in knots. My dear friends were so kind and gracious with me as I was learning. Except a funny thing happened – one of the very first “headshots” I took ended up being… kind of amazing! Truly, my friend had an agent at the time who said it was a great shot and began recommending me to other aspiring stage performers. I was only 20 years old – I had no idea how to work with clients!
I come from a family of entrepreneurs so I was able to lean on my dad, who had started many successful businesses, for guidance and support. Those years in NYC were quite an amazing ride for me. There are days I miss the backdrop of the city, but nowadays I get to shoot in places like this and… well, there’s just no comparison.
Not a day goes by that I don’t feel grateful for the chance to spend my days under these gorgeous skies.
