Are you planning a family vacation to the beautiful Big Island of Hawaii? One of the best ways to capture and preserve those precious moments is through a family photo session on the beach. The Big Island offers a stunning backdrop with breathtaking beaches, lush landscapes, and vibrant sunsets. And guess what? Our team has photographed over 700 families (yes, 700!) over the years, so we know a thing or two about finding the best Big Island Family Photo Session Locations.

1. Waikoloa Beaches

If you want that ‘sun setting over the water’ look for your family photos – you’re going to want to choose a sunset session on the West side of the Big Island. And WOW get ready for a spectacular sunset. We love Waikoloa for Big Island Family Photo Session Locations because the beaches are incredible. More beachy than Kona, which has much rockier shorelines. And a ton more options. Whether you want something a bit more private (but we can never guarantee a completely empty beach!) or a magical sandy beach, we know a place.

2. Old Kona Airport

This is a very popular spot in Kona for Big Island Family Photo Session Locations. Very importantly, you can easily get a commercial permit from the DLNR to work here. Since we never work at locations where we cannot get proper permitting, this spot is great. There are a not a lot of beach options in Kona that have permits. Old Kona has a sandy beach area, a beautiful spot with palms, as well as gorgeous lava rocks. This is a popular spot for locals and visitors so you can expect some crowds, but nothing crazy we promise. You can easily spend a full day here relaxing, snorkeling, and exploring.

3. Hilo

I’ll be honest – we hardly work in Hilo at all. The east side of the Big Island is known for its lush rainforests, waterfalls, and rain. Yes, rain. And frankly, rescheduling photo sessions multiple times for rainy weather is a real bummer. Hilo is an incredibly charming town, and we absolutely encourage a day trip over while you are visiting the Big Island. But regarding Big Island Family Photo Session Locations – Hilo isn’t on our list. We love it there, but we also want you to have a warm, sunshiny, golden photo session and we can best guarantee that on the West side of the Big Island!
