‘Anaeho’omalu Bay Sunset Photography Session Family Big Island – Hawaii
My goal when photographing families is to celebrate togetherness. And the best part about it, the reason why I never get bored and it never feels like I’m doing the same thing “over and over” is that “togetherness” looks different on every family. Maybe your family is a bit quieter – you’d rather sit on the sand together and watch the sun go down. I want to capture that! Or maybe your family wants to run into the ocean and splash around, get your nice clothes soaking wet and dance in the sunset? Guess what? I’m gonna run into the ocean with you (but not too far, I don’t have water housing for my gear yet ).
The important thing is I never ever want to force a family to look a certain way. I really do not have any expectations beyond wanting everyone to feel comfortable and have a good time. I want to ENHANCE your time in Hawaii, not have your session be something you absolutely dread!
So I go in, expectation free, ready and eager to meet your beautiful family. And you know what I’ve found? People really respond well to that. I say at the beginning of every session “there is nothing you can do wrong as long as you’re having fun and being yourselves. And I’ll be here to guide you and help you feel comfortable” and then we go into the sessions as friends and partners.
Maybe this is all sounding corny to you but it took me 10 years to realize that my own expectations for people was the exact thing holding my work back from being authentic. My desire to create “perfection” was hindering the outcome of the sessions and was unfair to clients. So I’ve changed my ways. I strive for honesty now in my work and it has helped me and my business grow beyond my wildest dreams!
