So first for the bad news – The beach lagoons in front of the Disney Aulani and Four Seasons Koolina hotels do not permit outside photographers. And you may be asking, “But these are public beaches! How is that allowed?”. That is a very fair question. These are not, in fact, public beaches. They are considered “man-made lagoons,” meaning landowners do not need to allow the public into these spaces. They do offer parking so visitors and locals can enjoy the beaches. But they do draw the line at outside commercial activities.

But now for the good news! If you are staying at one of these hotels and want to book Oahu Sunset family photos, we have a beautiful beach location available within walking distance! Or another gorgeous beach (featured in this blog post) about a 15-minute drive away. So you have options! Plus, you’ll enjoy having your family photos taken away from the crowds. It is much more comfortable for everyone, including your photographers.

Beach day at the Koolina Lagoons

Though not an option for family photos, the Koolina Lagoons are some of the most family-friendly ocean entries on Oahu.

There are four man-made lagoons, each offering a safe and serene swimming experience. The lagoons are uniquely designed to protect swimmers from the unpredictable ocean waves, providing calm and flat waters ideal for families and less confident swimmers. There’s no shortage of water activities to enjoy. From stand-up paddleboarding and canoeing to snorkeling, there’s something for everyone. Each of the four lagoons boasts family-friendly features, with shallow and calm waters making them perfect for children. The lagoons are connected by a paved, stroller-friendly walkway, making it easy for families to stroll and explore the breathtaking views.
