That’s what they call flights from LAX to Germany, long hauls. 10 hours doesn’t really phase me and for that I thank my mom, who often booked us on direct flights from Hawaii to New York or Boston when we were kids. Back then we were small enough to lay on the floor in our aisle to sleep. Oh how I wish I was still a kid who could get away with that. Either way, 10 hours is old hat! (To me at least. Matt, on the other hand was all doom and gloom about it – “oh man, this is going to be reaaaaaaallly long and miserable.”
But guess what? It wasn’t! I spent the hours leading up to the flight working myself up, and spent the first few hours on the plane bursting with energy at all the wonderfulness! We had a hot dinner, 2 glasses of wine (oh heyyyy) and then slept for 7 hours. 7 hours!! It was magical.
Our next flight to Athens was just sleep and food. No real excitement except the nice dude next to me who gave me his Kit Kat bar. I liked that guy a lot. Other Athens adventures so far include a desolate Customs station with no one there to give us our Greek passport stamp (is this legal??) and our sweet cab driver who spoke only enough English to let us know she doesn’t see well at night which makes driving difficult… ???!!!. As she was driving us at night. Terrifying.
And our very first adventuring in our home for the next few days was a perfect stroll around Athens that was full of wonderful cliches. We sat beneath the lights of the Acropolis, under an Olive tree listening to a local Greek musician play the piano. Followed by a gyro and some gelato for good measure. My heart is so so happy.
And now, bed. Good night from Greece!
